Jeffrey Robert Russell is a distinguished Board Certified Specialist in Family Law, proudly serving clients throughout Raleigh, NC, at Tharrington Smith, LLP. As a native of Western North Carolina, Mr. Russell brings a deep understanding of the local legal landscape to his practice. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Furman University in 1999 and graduated magna cum laude from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University in 2012. Prior to joining Tharrington Smith in 2013, Mr. Russell honed his legal skills as a clerk for the Honorable John C. Martin, Chief Judge of the North Carolina Court of Appeals. At Campbell Law School, Mr. Russell excelled as a candidate member and Chief Comments Editor of the Law Review, while also serving as a research assistant to Professor James B. McLaughlin, contributing to the editing of Webster’s Real Estate Law in North Carolina. His commitment to advocacy is evidenced by multiple accolades, including the North Carolina Advocates for Justice Calhoun Advocacy Award and the ALI-ABA Scholarship & Leadership Award. Mr. Russell's prowess in legal advocacy was showcased during his participation in the Campbell Law mock trial and moot court teams, where he earned recognition as a regional runner-up in the American Association of Justice’s National Student Trial Advocacy Competition and as a semi-finalist in the U.C. Davis Asylum & Refugee National Moot Court Competition. A national member of the Order of the Barristers, Mr. Russell is recognized for his exceptional courtroom skills and dedication to the legal profession. He is actively involved in the Wake County Bar Association and the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association. Beyond his practice, he has contributed to the legal community as a coach for Campbell Law’s moot court team, volunteered for the North Carolina Bar Association’s 4All Statewide Service Day, and served as a guest lecturer at the University of North Carolina Law School’s Family Law Practice Seminar. Since 2016, he has consistently been named a Rising Star by North Carolina Super Lawyers. Outside the courtroom, Mr. Russell enjoys a variety of outdoor pursuits, including backpacking, snow skiing, and SCUBA diving, reflecting his adventurous spirit and commitment to a well-rounded life.
