A graduate of California Western University in 1968, where he was honored in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, Van furthered his legal education at Arizona State University College of Law, earning his J.D. cum laude in 1972. During his time at law school, he demonstrated his dedication to legal scholarship by serving as an editor on the Arizona State Law Journal. A Fellow in the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services and Education, he has also made significant contributions as a founding director of the Arizona Center for Law in the Public Interest. In a landmark case in 1977, Van successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, establishing the right for lawyers and other professionals to advertise their services—a victory that has led to reduced legal costs for consumers. His influence extends beyond the courtroom; he is a published author, having written a legal advice column for various Arizona newspapers and crafted self-help legal packets that empower individuals to navigate their legal needs independently. Originally hailing from Tennessee, Van has called Arizona home since 1959, where he continues to advocate for justice and uphold the values of the legal profession with passion and integrity.
