About
Rory has been practicing law since 2003 and founded Vohwinkel Law in 2009. He has successfully handled thousands of bankruptcy and personal injury cases. Prior to opening Vohwinkel Law, Rory worked as general counsel for a commercial real estate firm, and before that he practiced law at one of Nevada’s oldest law firms representing large companies and mortgage lenders. Working for large companies and banks gave Rory insight into how creditors and lenders operate, and how they take advantage of people with predatory lending tactics, trapping people in a vicious cycle of debt. Then in 2008, the Great Recession happened and many people began losing their homes and falling deep into debt. Rory knew he had to do something. It was then that Rory began fighting on behalf of his clients against the banks and creditors helping people stay in their homes and get rid of debt. It was then that Rory realized his passion for helping people in financial distress, and he opened Vohwinkel Law. By 2017, Vohwinkel Law was voted Best of Las Vegas among bankruptcy law firms, an award it would go on to win three years in a row. Rory is one of Nevada’s most successful bankruptcy attorneys and has filed thousands of chapter 7 and chapter 13 bankruptcy cases. He has erased over $50 million in debt for his clients through bankruptcy since 2009, and he has helped hundreds of clients stop foreclosure and keep their homes. He even helped a former NBA basketball player get rid of over $11 million in debt. Rory and his wife, Liz, believe strongly in giving back to the community. They are avid supporters of various charitable organizations such as Nevada Public Radio, PBS, and United Way of Southern Nevada, among others. Additionally, Liz and Rory are proud Federal Club Members of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ advocacy group and political lobbying organization in the United States. Rory has also volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada program serving as a big brother for 2 years. In 2000, Rory received his Bachelor of Science degree from Santa Clara University located in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he majored in both History and Political Science. He received his Juris Doctorate (JD) from the University of Arizona College of Law in 2003, where he was on the Dean’s List his first semester. While in law school, Rory was on the University of Arizona men’s club volleyball team all three years and won multiple club volleyball national championships. He continues to enjoy playing and coaching volleyball. Rory has been licensed to practice law in Nevada since 2003 and California since 2011. He is a licensed real estate broker in both states as well. On a more personal note, Rory is a second-generation native of Las Vegas. He graduated from Durango High School. During the 1930s, his great-grandparents on his dad’s side migrated west from Oklahoma to escape the Dust Bowls, and his great-grandfather helped build the Hoover Dam, working as a carpenter. His great-grandparents on his mom’s side sold their farm in 1944 in Farmington, New Mexico, loaded up their Model T Ford and headed West to California. Unfortunately, their Model T broke down in Nevada, and Rory’s great-grandfather got a job working at a munitions plant in Hawthorne, Nevada during WWII. When the war was over, his mom’s family settled in Las Vegas and have been there ever since. He and his family have seen many changes in the Las Vegas valley over the decades.
