David B. Sharpe is a distinguished attorney based in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he brings a wealth of expertise to the field of energy law, particularly within the maritime sector. As a key member of the Lugenbuhl, Wheaton, Peck, Rankin & Hubbard firm, David specializes in a diverse array of areas including marine insurance coverage, marine finance, vessel documentation, bankruptcy and restructuring, and international maritime law. His practice is dedicated to representing clients involved in the ownership, operation, chartering, and employment of vessels, guiding them through the complexities of risk management across the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, and global offshore maritime oilfield and alternative energy markets. A native of Bethesda, Maryland, David earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Tulane University in 1985. Before embarking on his legal career, he honed his technical skills as a systems engineer at Motorola Communications in Houston, Texas, where he played a pivotal role in designing radio systems for both commercial and public safety sectors, particularly in the Gulf Coast region. David pursued his legal education at George Washington University’s National Law Center, graduating with honors in 1990. He returned to New Orleans to practice admiralty and maritime law, quickly establishing himself as a leading authority in maritime contracts—including time and bareboat charter parties, master service contracts, and marine insurance agreements—as well as related commercial litigation matters such as maritime liens and vessel arrest. In addition to his robust legal practice, David contributes to the academic community as an adjunct professor at Tulane Law School, where he teaches a course on towage and offshore service law. He is a co-editor of the West Publishing casebook, “Cases & Materials on Admiralty,” and the “Handbook of Maritime Laws & Forms,” and has authored numerous articles on maritime law topics. David's dedication to both his clients and the advancement of legal knowledge makes him a respected figure in the maritime and energy law sectors.
