About

Charles Lee Mudd Jr. is the founder and principal of Mudd Law. Over the last twenty years, Mr. Mudd has developed a broad-based practice representing local, national, and international clientele in diverse litigation and transactional matters. Of particular relevance, Mr. Mudd has become internationally known on issues of space law and policy as well as diverse areas of Internet law. He has appeared in state and federal courts throughout the United States, taught at colleges and universities, and appeared in national media. Over the last few years, Charles expanded the firm's practice into the commercial space industry. Beyond providing general business representation to clients in the space sector, Charles and his firm provide nuanced representation on issues such as esport control (ITAR and EAR), regulatory compliance and licensing (FAA, FCC, and NOAA), and distinct space applications. More broadly, Charles invests a significant amount of his time to the development of sound space law and policy. He has attended and spoken at United Nations conferences on space law and policy as well as provided testimony before federal regulators. He regularly speaks on space law issues across the United States in a variety of settings (of late, most in a virtual format). Charles holds memberships in the American Astronomical Society, AIAA, and IEEE. He serves on the Board of Directors for NewSpace Chicago. Mr. Mudd is licensed to practice law in Illinois, Indiana, Connecticut and Utah. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth and Seventh Circuits. He is also admitted to the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, Central District of Illinois, Northern District of Indiana, Central District of Utah, Central District of Michigan, Northern District of Florida, and the District of Colorado. Apart from practicing law, Charles has been an active member of the legal community. For more than twenty-five years, he has been a member of the International Technology Law Association ("ITechLaw"). He recently completed a six-yar tenure on ITechLaw's Biard of Directors. He also served as long-standing member of the Section Council for the Illinois State Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Section. More recently, ge became admitted to the International Institute of Space Law. He also enjoys membership in the European Centre for Space Law. Charles also has participated in his local business community by serving as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Northcenter Chamber of Commerce and as a Member of the Kedzie-Elston Business and Industrial Council. He also served as Cubmaster for a local Cub Scout Pack and as President of the Parent Council for the local middle school. Among his hobbies and interests, Charles has a passion for astronomy, astrophysics, coding, and genealogical research.
